Look out for that Deer!

A cautionary tale that makes clear the case for wearing proper gear when riding fast Ebikes, especially a good full face helmet!

It was around 8:30 in the evening and I was going for a short ride around town to test my buddy's bike after doing a bit of work on it. Left my house in town and made it about half a mile to what is known here as cemetery Hill. It is essentially a small valley that divides the North and Northeast part of my town. The hill is quite steep going down. So I usually just Coast. even so starting at about 10mph you end up going about 30mph once to the bottom.

Well on this evening when I got to the bottom there happened to be a rather large deer coming from the other side of the valley perpendicular with the road.

I guess the sound of the bike must have scared it because it decided to go into a full Sprint heading straight for me. Not suspecting anything coming from that side I was paying more attention to any cars that might be turning on to the road and where my friend was of course.

Needless to say I never saw the deer until it was plowing into my front wheel and fork. It's struck them with such Force that it completely swept the front of the bike out from underneath me and launched me into the air like I was being shot from a catapult. I landed hard on my head and shoulder followed by my hip and knee.

The result was a broken collarbone, a cracked rib, a small hairline fracture in my hip and a minor concussion. Had I not been wearing a helmet it is quite easy to imagine that I would not be here telling this story right now. Anyway I just thought it was worth a share. I Hope that it may teach some of you that even if you're an excellent Rider and doing everything right in a split second things can change! Sometimes something as simple as a helmet can make all the difference.
