Lightning Rods Big Block Motor and Controller Kits

What are the Lightning Rods Motors?

The Lightning Rods motors are are a family of motors DC brushless motors that come in four sizes.

The rotor is an IPM structure which enables it to be hit with large amounts of flux or field weakening to attain high RPMs without the risk of magnets becoming detached or damaged from the high centrifugal forces.

The smallest motor is the appropriately named Small Block but it still packs a punch at 6kw. Next up is the standard Big Block which can deliver up to 10kw with the Big Block XL over 12kw.

The largest motor is the new XXL and there is some more information on this motor later on.

Lightning Rods Motor Kits

The lightning Rods motor is very versatile and the different sizes have been used for many different bikes including tube frame bikes and Enduro frames. The kits can be adapted to be either a throttle only motorcycle or still retain the ability to pedal along with a secondary chain drive system.

You can see some examples of the bikes built with Lightning Rods motor kits in the gallery here.

Lightning Rods Big Block XL for Vector Typhoon
ASI BAC4000 Controller - High Voltage Tuned

ASI Controllers tuned by Mr High Voltage

To meet the power requirements of these motors we will be using the ASI BAC2000, BAC4000 and BAC8000 controllers. These sophisticated FOC controllers allow the Lightning Rods motors to achieve incredibly high RPM.

Kits are supplied with our own custom harnesses which can easily be adapted to any electric vehicle build using the Lightning Rods motors.

Once you have decided which motor and drive train you will be using please feel free to get in touch with High Voltage to determine your controller requirements.

Regen Throttle

All High Voltage controller kits for the Lightning Rods motors come with the option for variable regen braking. This is where the braking strength is modulated with a second throttle. There are several ways to do this.

You can use a twist throttle reversed so you roll forwards to brake. The use of a thumb throttle also works well as Nick is demonstrating in the video.

This is a really nice feature to have as it saves your brakes. The energy sent back to the battery is not a game changer but it is a small boost especially if ride long hills on it.

Lightning Rods Big Block XXL IPM DC electric motor

What is the XXL?

The XXL is the latest addition to the Lightning Rods family. This comes with much bigger phase wires, a larger stator and a beefed up rotor and spindle. In fact everypart of this new motor has been strengthened.

We expect this motor to yield up to 22kw of power. It is heading into bench testing in the next few weeks (Jan 2022). Advanced work is already in progress to mount this motor onto several bikes including the Sur Ron. More information will be shared on Discord as this testing takes place.

What is the pricing on these Motor and Controller Kits

More information on pricing will be released in the next little while. There are many different combinations with this motor. Kits that use the BAC8000 will obviously be more expensive that ones with the BAC2000. Similarly a Big Block XXL carries a higher price tag than the small block.

We are by no means mercenaries however and we will look to provide a package that we feel is not only good value for your money but also of high quality and with the kind of support out customers have come to expect.

Please get in touch to discuss your requirements and we will be able to give you a ball park figure as to the costs for an individual project.
